School
The Elementary classroom is a five-year program, which serves children in first through fifth grade. All activities are designed to help students acquire the basic cognitive functions needed to think logically, to perceive the world in structured, orderly and reasonable ways, to know how to learn, to and apply their intelligence to new learning and problem-solving situations. A concept integral to the classroom is that children learn best when they are actively involved in their own learning. This is accomplished through student-centered activities, facilitating critical thinking and encouraging cooperative learning. >>> Learn more about Elementary program ... The classroom atmosphere in our Elementary Program promotes the child's overall growth through individual, small and large group experiences. Students receive instruction in English Language Arts, American Sign Language, Mathematics, History and Social Science, Science and Technology, Human Development, Art, PE, Library The Elementary program is bilingual as it fosters the development of American Sign Language (ASL) and English. In order to make language and learning accessible to all students, the primary language of most classrooms is ASL. In all subject areas, including English class, English is taught as a language for reading and writing. In addition, many students receive instruction in spoken English and/or communication strategies, depending on their need. This may include services from a speech and language pathologist (e.g., services within the Spoken English/Communication Department), or from a teacher of the Deaf using sign supported spoken English. Parents are an integral part of the program and are encouraged to visit and join activities in the classrooms. They have regularly scheduled conferences twice throughout the year. Informational meetings and ASL classes are available to parents as well. |
