The Learning Center’s High School offers a varied set of academic and vocational options which ensure that all students have the right to maximize their true potential. Our mission is to maintain an academic environment which focuses on providing challenging experiences to develop our students’ ability to think creatively and critically. The High School program provides a comprehensive secondary academic curriculum from which students obtain a solid educational foundation. In addition to the English, literature, math, social studies, science and senior seminar requirements, the students have a variety of course options. Some of these include: Advanced Placement (AP)courses in English and English Literature, human sexuality, CSI-TLC, filmmaking, animal studies, technology, First Aid-CPR, art and computers. All High School classes are geared toward post-secondary educational or vocational pursuits. >>> To learn more about High School Program ... Community interaction is essential for students to better understand the world that awaits them. Our High School invites visitors to the school and makes field trips a part of the curriculum. The students have the opportunity to participate in local, state and regional educational events (Academic Bowl, Essay Contests, Math Bowl, etc.) As in our Middle School program, counseling is available to help students through this transitional stage in life. The counseling program offers individual, group and short-term family therapy. The goal is to assist students in their social and emotional development and to increase their independent living skills. Extracurricular activities are important for High School students, especially those who commute daily and have little social interaction with Deaf peers at home. Students may participate in intramural or interscholastic team sports such as basketball, track and soccer. The High School has an active Student Body Government, SBG that works with the administration and students on creating and adapting policies for the department. They also participate in fundraisers to support extracurricular activities. The High School has a chapter of the Junior National Association of the Deaf. Students active in Jr. NAD attend regional and national conferences annually. Each December, they sponsor our Adopt-a-Family Program, which provides food, clothing and toys for local Deaf families in need. With these and other activities, students have many opportunities to develop their leadership skills throughout their high school years. TLC graduates have furthered their education at the following colleges: Boston University, Fitchburg State College, Gallaudet University, Lamar University, Princeton University, The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (at RIT), Northern Essex community College, Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Salem State College (RIT), Southwest Institute for the Deaf, Universtiy of Arizona and University of Massachusetts. |
