Program
The Intensive program (all ages and programs) provides an exceptional learning environment for Deaf students with cognitive or behavioral disabilities. The philosophy of the program is based on the importance of the growth and development of the "whole" child. The students' diversity of needs demands a highly individualized education. The Learning Center's Intensive program allows each student to learn at his or her own pace. Our goal is to foster the development of all students to their fullest potential. >>> Learn more about intensive program ... To accomplish our goals for each student, the Intensive Program learning environment is highly structured. Classes are small, with a reduced student/teacher ratio allowing for close supervision and constant evaluation of each child's academic progress, as well as his or her social and emotional growth. Instruction consists of structured experiential activities that address each child's specific needs: fine and gross motor activities, communication skills, personal hygiene, daily living skills, behavioral development, and social and emotional growth. Speech and language development and physical and occupational therapy are regular parts of the program, if needed. Some children continue to work best with specialized attention in a small self-contained classroom. When appropriate, however, the Intensive program provides the child with opportunities to join other classroom settings within The Learning Center. This gives the Intensive Program student an opportunity for varied social interaction, expanded Deaf role models, and additional situations in which to exercise communication skills. Communication between staff and family is an integral component of the partnership between home and school. Family involvement is particularly important, and parents are encouraged to frequently visit their child's classroom. |
