Verizon Foundation Grant Launches Signing for Success
In November 2008, TLC launches Signing for Success a new family sign language initiative that brings American Sign Language (ASL) classes into the home via videophone technology.  Thanks to a $20,000 grant from Verizon Foundation, 10 families are now enrolled in the fall session; another session for ten more families will be offered in the spring.  Program coordinator Fran Conlin says, “The response has been terrific. We already have a waiting list of families who want to be involved!”

While TLC offers ASL classes at the school, many families have difficulty participating. Since the videophone technology can be placed inside each family’s home, there will no longer be cause for concern over the costs of gas and childcare to attend ASL classes. For parents juggling busy schedules, classes are arranged at a time that is most convenient for the family and teacher. The sessions run 2 hours per week for a total of 8 weeks.  Through a partnership with Sorenson Communications, the videophone technology is provided free of charge to all families and instructors.

In learning American Sign Language, Deaf and hard-of-hearing children not only learn a language, but also develop a foundation for conceptual knowledge and an understanding of the world around them. We anticipate that as parents and family members learn to sign, students will feel more positive about themselves, their abilities, and their role in their families.  “Our goal is to facilitate communication and provide a strong foundation for learning in the home,” explains Conlin.

For TLC Executive Director Michael Bello, Signing for Success represents the very best in school/community partnerships.  “This program is an excellent example of the great things that can happen when businesses and schools collaborate,” says Bello.   “We are very grateful to the Verizon Foundation and Sorenson Communications for supporting this endeavor.”
