WORKSHOPS ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About ASL/English Bilingual Bimodal Education Target audience: Parents of young deaf or hard of hearing children
January 12 and February 9, 2012, 7-8 p.m. (EST)

The Clerc Center will offer a two-part webinar for families in January and February 2012.

• Part 1 will provide an overview of ASL/English Bilingual Early Childhood Education and the research supporting its positive impact on ASL and spoken language acquisition.

• Part 2 will discuss how families can support their child's successful bilingual bimodal development.

This webinar is presented by Susanne Scott, cochlear implant bilingual specialist at the Clerc Center, and Dr. Laurene Simms, professor of education at Gallaudet University.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

The Learning Center for the Deaf receives scholarship applications from various sources throughout the year.  We suggest that parents and students review this list on a bi-weekly basis.  We will update this list as new scholarships arrive and deadlines pass.
 
1.  HAMILTON RELAY SCHOLARSHIP

       •     Eligibility:  Students who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled.
       •     Scholarship: $500 per student.
       •    Contact Moira Hennessy at 617-886-5157 or email: Moira.hennessey@hamiltonrelay.com.
       •    Applications: available in the Senior Transition Seminar Classroom
       •    Deadline: March 30, 2012.

2.  SERTOMA SCHOLARSHIP

  • Eligibility: Student must have a 40 dB bilateral hearing loss.
  • Student must be an American citizen.
  • Student must be entering college on a full time basis and working towards a bachelor's degree.
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Scholarship: $1000 per student.
  • Applications: available in the Senior Transition Seminar Classroom
  • Deadline: May 1, 2012.

3.  CHILD WELFARE FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATORS HUMAN SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

  • Eligibility:  Student must be entering their sophomore or junior year in college.
  • Must be in the field of human services
  • Scholarship:  $1000 per student
  • Applications: available from the Transition Coordinator, Nancy Frazer Evangelista
  • Deadline:  September 30, 2012
