The Learning Center's athletic program takes place in a beautiful regulation-size gymnasium which was constructed in 1991. Physical Education classes are held during the school day for all age groups. Adaptive PE classes are also conducted for some students, with consultation or direct services of a TLC physical therapist. After school hours, the gymnasium bustles with the activity of seasonal sports: soccer, volleyball, basketball, track and field and cheerleading.
Various programs are offered for Elementary, Middle School and High School students after regular school hours. While team sports are the favorite, other clubs and activities have included swim instruction and certification, fitness/weight training, table games, biking, arts and crafts, dance and others. The goals are to foster personal growth and to provide opportunities for participation in activities which may be unavailable at home or in school.
Youth teams in soccer and basketball allow boys and girls, ages 10 to 13, to develop their skills. They participate in clinics, drills, and practice games, and compete with students from area schools. Middle School and High School students who choose to join athletic teams participate in several leagues which involve both Deaf and hearing schools. TLC boys', girls' and coed teams have won several championships in recent years and have hosted major tournaments with schools from across the country.
The Learning Center is a strong proponent of full participation. Sportsmanship, teamwork, school spirit, and healthy, respectful attitudes and behavior are important themes for all athletic team members.
