The Learning Center for the Deaf Appoints New CEO
Posted 05/17/2018 02:06PM

The Learning Center for the Deaf (TLC) is excited to welcome Sarah Glenn-Smith as its new Chief Executive Officer. After an extensive nationwide search that considered candidates from leading schools for the deaf and other organizations providing services to the deaf, Sarah was selected by the unanimous vote of the CEO Search Committee and TLC Board. As the first CEO of TLC, Sarah will lead the thriving multi-service organization in expanding the educational, therapeutic, community, and cultural and research programs and services it provides to deaf and hard of hearing children and adults locally, nationally and worldwide. Her tenure begins in the summer of 2018.

Since its founding in 1970, TLC has experienced steady growth and seen increased diversity in its served population. Its two schools — TLC’s largest and best-known programs, each led by a Deaf director — are leaders in their fields. Over the past 48 years, the organization has added a robust set of community, cultural and research services and programs, evolving into a complex, multi-service organization. New England’s largest employer of people who are deaf, the organization continues to successfully recruit Deaf staff regionally and nationally, and its management and board has benefited enormously from the leadership of people like Marie Philip, the influential Deaf leader who inspired TLC to become an early and exceptional leader in bilingual-bicultural education.

The CEO position aligns Sarah’s passion for leadership with her commitment to serving the Deaf community, and allows her to draw upon her personal and professional experience (her spouse and oldest daughter are Deaf). Sarah began her career at the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD) where she became an interpreter with multiple roles. As Executive Director of Deaf Adult Services in Buffalo, New York, she improved the organization’s financial strength, recruited and positioned deaf leaders throughout the organization, and led and inspired commitment by staff and the community. Sarah has demonstrated her clear ability to lead, as a Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and President— in the healthcare industry as well as in education. Sarah has a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and did her dissertation on audism. She also has an Executive Masters of Business Administration.
