Team TLC Steps Up to Eradicate Stigma of Hearing Loss
Led by the Finnegan family and Team Captain David Finnegan, Team TLC was the largest fundraising team at this year’s Walk4Hearing event, raising almost $8,000.
Sponsored by The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), Walk4Hearing organizers and participants are on a crusade to eradicate the stigma associated with hearing loss.
Since it beginning in 2006, over 26,000 walkers have stepped up to help raise crucial funds for programs and services that benefit deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their families. The Hearing Loss Association of America is committed to opening up the world of communication to people with hearing loss through information, education, advocacy, and support.
When David and Kelli Finnegan heard about the Walk4Hearing they saw an opportunity to raise money for The Learning Center and also help promote TLC’s mission and vision among a group of people who may need one of the many services TLC provides.
For the past two years, David and Kelli have organized friends and family members to join them in walking and in making donations to Team TLC. Walk participants can direct 40% of the money they raise to a charity of their choice and Team TLC participants agree to support The Learning Center for the Deaf. This has generated vital funding for TLC programs and has increased TLC’s profile and visibility among an important audience.
David said, “It’s an honor to do something to help TLC and their amazing teachers and staff. I don’t know where we would be if we hadn’t have found TLC. We are part of the family now!”
