The Future is Yours

Endless possibilities for deaf & hard of hearing students — and their families

At The Learning Center For The Deaf (TLC), deaf and hard of hearing students thrive when communication barriers and other limitations are removed, and a warm, bilingual, bicultural community is introduced. Between two expert schools, and supporting community programs, students are empowered to lead the way in shaping their futures with intention and possibility.

On our campus, American Sign Language is the predominant language for students, staff, and visitors. We are guided by inclusivity, innovation, quality, and collaboration to create an environment where every student can thrive along the pathways they carve for themselves.

TLC is, at its core, a partner to each student, their families, and communities that surround them in ensuring their full potential is met—then exceeded. All this at zero cost to our families.

Marie Philip School

A transformative education for every stage

Marie Philip School (MPS) transforms the educational experience for deaf and hard of hearing students, from infants to Pre-K to high school seniors, in a dynamic, bilingual environment. Our Bilingual/Bicultural model that equips students with the tools to build literacy in both languages, while fostering academic success and personal growth.

With innovative initiatives found in the Early Childhood Center and accredited elementary and secondary school curriculums, MPS provides a comprehensive education tailored to each student’s needs, preparing them for college, careers, and life beyond the classroom. Comprehensive support services include residential options, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, specialized ASL instruction, and more — all under the TLC umbrella.

Walden School

Personalized education for lifelong growth

Walden School (WS) offers a research-based educational and therapeutic experience for deaf and hard of hearing students ages 7 to 22 with complex behavioral health needs. WS is a 365-day program; our students live, learn, and thrive on campus. Every student’s plan is thoughtfully crafted to build self esteem, self-reliance, and essential life skills through a blend of engaging academics, recreation, career preparation, and individualized support.

In high school, I was a commuting athlete for two years. Balancing a long commute with sports, late nights of homework, and early mornings left me exhausted. I decided to become a residential student for the last two years. Living on campus gave me the focus I needed to excel academically and the time to develop skills that have shaped my life ever since.

TLC Student

If it were not for the enthusiastic influence and encouragement that Avery received from their teacher at TLC, Avery would not be where they are today as a thriving student. TLC is where deaf and hard of hearing children are able to thrive!

TLC Parent

Lawrence Public Schools fully endorse The Learning Center for the Deaf. I have been impressed with their commitment to academic rigor with ASL supports. TLC is informative in all data collection, progress reports, and meetings. Communication between the school and district is excellent.

Local Education Representative

We are deeply grateful for the profound change we see in our son. His language is exploding and he is a much happier child who has been enjoying an easier time relating to peers and adults alike. He is all smiles at every drop off each morning and is greeted by people who are just as happy to see him. Our only regret is not having him attend this school sooner.

TLC Parent

Being surrounded by Deaf peers and mentors was transformative. At TLC, I blossomed—gaining confidence in my sign language skills, forming lasting social connections, and embracing my Deaf identity. Here, I am truly seen, supported, and empowered.

TLC Alumni

If you’re on the fence about TLC, let me be blunt: don’t hesitate. From sign‑language classes and home visits to speech‑language sessions and community events, TLC is the full package. I can’t imagine parenting a deaf child without this village. Seriously—join the family, and watch your world flip right side up.
