Special Olympics
Students who are eligible to compete in Special Olympics participate in local events and competitions. Deafness is not a qualifier for the Special Olympics, but students may meet other eligibility criteria like intellectual disabilities or cognitive delays. Students who fit the criteria, are age 8, and have the desire to participate in Special Olympics are given every opportunity and supported in their competitions.
We currently offer soccer, bowling, and track and field through a partnership with the Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA).

Athletics Staff
Chris graduated from Lexington School for the Deaf and California State University, Northridge, majoring in Physical Education. He most recently served as Athletic Director at the American School for the Deaf.
As Vice President of the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA), Chris is very familiar with the New England Preparatory Schools Athletic Council (NEPSAC). He is also basketball referee and collegiate softball umpire.
Fun fact - Chris traveled to Japan in 2025 to join the 2025 Deaflympics as a Referee!
Emily was born and raised in an athletic family; she has played various sports her entire life in every season! After high school, Emily studied ASL/English Interpreting and played field hockey in college. After interpreting for a few years, she became an classroom assistant in TLC's elementary program in 2018. She found her passion working in Special Education, and got her certification as a Registered Behavioral Technician in 2023. During her time at TLC, Emily has been involved with various athletic teams and after school activities, having coached youth programs, Special Olympics, middle school level, and varsity programs. She was assistant coach for an ESDAA Championship basketball team in 2024, and coached the girls volleyball team to the Homecoming Volleyball Championship in 2025.
In her spare time, Emily loves to read, knit and (recently) crochet. She is a HUGE Boston Bruins ice hockey fan!

"TLC's Athletics Program helped me realized there are opportunities out there for sports, such as Deaflympics, Olympics, semi-professional and professional. Put your 100 percent passion in sports if you want to succeed in life. Our school is a Deaf team where I can be myself and show people who we are. I come from a hearing family and there is a lot of difficulties but the team made it look easy. TLC Athletics taught me a lot. You learn from one another."
