After School Programs
Various after-school programs are offered to elementary, middle school and high school students. While team sports are always our most popular, other clubs and activities have included:
- Swim instruction and certification
- Fitness/weight training
- Canoeing and kayaking
- Arts and crafts
The program’s goal is to advance personal growth and encourage involvement in recreations which may not be available at home or during the school day.
Inter and Intramural Sports, Physical Education
The Learning Center's athletic program operates in a first-rate regulation-size gymnasium and on spacious playing fields. Physical education classes for all age groups are held during the school day, with adaptive PE classes also conducted for some students with consultation or direct services of a TLC physical therapist. After school hours, game spaces, indoors and out, are alive with the enthusiastic pursuit of seasonal sports and activities such as basketball, volleyball, track and field, soccer and cheerleading.
Youth teams in soccer and basketball allow boys and girls ages 10 to 13 to develop their skills by participating in clinics, drills, and practice games and competing with students from area schools. Middle and high school students who choose to join athletic teams play in several leagues which involve both Deaf and hearing schools. TLC boys', girls' and coed teams have won several championships in recent years and have hosted major tournaments with schools from across the country.
The Learning Center is a strong proponent of full participation. Sportsmanship, teamwork and school spirit, along with healthy, respectful attitudes and behavior are important principles for all team members. Our interscholastic basketball and soccer teams are members:
- Girls’ Independent League of Massachusetts
- Massachusetts Bay Independent League
- Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletics Association
