Residential and educational placements follow separate approval processes, but they come together to create a comprehensive, supportive environment where Deaf youth can develop language, strengthen relationships, experience academic success, build independence, and prepare for their future.
How Referrals Work
Walden partners with families, school districts, and state agencies to create individualized pathways for Deaf youth with complex educational, communication, and therapeutic needs.
Because Walden provides both a specialized educational program and a 365-day residential program, referrals involve two coordinated processes:
Residential Placement
- Residential referrals are made through the appropriate state agency or department responsible for determining eligibility for residential services. This process evaluates the student's need for a structured therapeutic living environment.
Educational Placement
- Referral and placement processes vary by state and by each student’s circumstances. Referrals may come from school districts, DCF/CPS agencies, or other authorized organizations. Walden works closely with the referring agency and family to determine program fit and navigate the educational and residential placement process.
Working Together
Once both pathways are in place, Walden's interdisciplinary team partners with families, school districts, and residential agencies to create one integrated plan. Educational goals, therapeutic supports, residential programming, communication development, and transition planning are coordinated so students experience consistency across every part of their day.
