The Learning Center for the Deaf (TLC) recently received $2,200 in funding to support the purchase of a new drum for Marie Philip School and Walden School.
TLC Senior James Zellner initiated a grant proposal to support this purchase, describing how drums and drumming play a significant role in Deaf culture.
The organization was chosen as a $1,000 grant recipient for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Student Service Grant, part of a new national initiative to empower student leaders to create and lead service projects that address community needs.
The Massapequa High School ASL Club also donated an additional $1,200 to go toward the purchase of the drum equipment.
Drums provide a unique avenue for musical expression and community engagement within the Deaf community. Deaf individuals can appreciate and participate in drumming through vibrations, visual cues, and the tactile feel of the instruments.
Drumming can also be valuable for communication, socialization, and artistic expression. TLC often uses its drums during school and community-based events and celebrations.
